About this site

A county by county reference for setting a carport, garage, barn or RV cover on land in Texas. It sells nothing, and it takes no leads.

What this site is

A reference for all 254 Texas counties. It answers one question: what a county can and cannot require before you set a carport, garage, barn or RV cover on your land.

It sells nothing. There is no quote form here, no price request, and no lead handover. That separation is the point: a reference that sells you something cannot be trusted to tell you that you do not need a permit.

About the name

Grand State Metal Buildings was a Texas metal building company that closed. We took over the domain and rebuilt it as a reference site. We are not that company, we do not sell what it sold, and we cannot help with an order it took. If you are looking for the old company, this site is not it.

How a claim gets on a page

Every county page gives three separate answers, because three different authorities can reach a building and they do not overlap: the county floodplain permit, the county building permit, and the on-site sewage facility permit.

No claim is published without three things: the address of the source, the sentence from that source quoted word for word, and the date we read it. A build that finds a claim without all three fails and does not ship. There are 3,248 sources quoted across the site.

We keep our own copy of the source documents, because a county web page can disappear between one month and the next. Where a document was read from a scan, the page says so.

A county's summary of a Texas statute is not the statute, so we read the statute. But where a county says in its own words that it requires a permit and we read the law more narrowly, the page leads with the county and shows both readings. You cannot win that argument at the gate on delivery day.

What the site does not do

  • It does not sell buildings, quote buildings, or pass your details to anyone.
  • It does not give engineering or legal advice. A county can change an order at any time.
  • It does not guess. Where an answer is unsettled, the page says it is open and says what would close it.

Tell us what is wrong

If a county page is wrong or out of date, say so at Report a correction. We re-read the county's own source before anything changes.
